The jury in Tapejara convicted a man on September 11, 2026, as charged by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS) with the femicide of his wife. The sentence was fixed at 75 years of imprisonment, in the initial closed regime. The crime occurred on November 25, 2024, which marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
According to the MPRS indictment, the victim was killed with knife blows inside the couple's home. The crime was committed in the presence of the two children, who were 6 and 8 years old at the time. The jurors accepted the thesis presented by the Public Prosecutor's Office and recognized the practice of femicide, as well as aggravating factors related to the recourse that made it difficult for the victim to defend herself and the fact that the murder took place in the presence of the woman's descendants.
Prosecutor Albino Romero Junior represented the MPRS in court. He stated that the conviction represents a firm response to violence against women and the severity of the facts. "The decision of the jurors recognizes the extreme gravity of the crime and reaffirms the importance of combating gender-based violence, especially in cases that affect the entire family structure and leave deep marks on victims, such as children," he said.
In setting the sentence, the court considered the severity of the circumstances of the crime, highlighting that the children witnessed their mother's murder and became orphaned due to the conduct of their own father. The sentence also pointed out the consequences of the loss for the children, who were deprived of companionship, care, and maternal reference during an important stage of development. The defendant, who was already in pre-trial detention, had his detention maintained and could not appeal in freedom.
