The Public Ministry of Ceará, through the State Program for Protection and Defense of Consumers (Decon), imposed fines totaling R$ 1,230,769.89 on various suppliers for violating consumer rights in cases involving defective products and service failures. The penalties resulted from 34 administrative decisions issued during Operation "Day of the Client".
The violations involved manufacturers, retailers, e-commerce platforms, and technical assistance services. The irregularities identified include the sale of defective goods, refusal to honor warranties, failure to comply with offers and agreements with consumers, as well as inadequate information about products and services.
The majority of the cases involved complaints related to cell phones, televisions, appliances, motorcycles, computers, and air conditioning units. In several cases, suppliers attributed the defects to alleged misuse by consumers without providing sufficient evidence, denying warranty coverage, or charging excessive repair costs.
Decon also identified failures in software updates, ineffectiveness of technical assistance, refusal to replace defective products, and the use of unilateral reports to absolve companies of responsibility.
The fines were imposed based on the Consumer Protection Code. Suppliers were notified of the decisions and can appeal in the administrative sphere.
