Benefiting from a temporary release from prison on the morning of July 17th, a man returned to the city of Mata, purchased gasoline at a gas station, and, minutes later, set fire to his own residence to target the homes of family members with whom he had disputes, putting neighboring residents at risk and causing material damage. He was prosecuted by the Ministério Público do Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS) and sentenced on Wednesday, September 9th, to 6 years and 8 months in prison, under a closed regime, in addition to a fine.

The complaint was filed by Prosecutor Tayse Bielecki Yamanaka on July 23. According to her, the convicted individual left the prison under a temporary release and drove to a gas station, where he purchased gasoline. Subsequently, he returned to the residence in Mata and started the fire. The flames destroyed the property and spread to neighboring houses belonging to family members, causing material damage. According to the investigation, the location is in a densely populated urban area, which increased the risk to the community.

In the ruling, the judiciary recognized the commission of the crime of arson in a dwelling or a dwelling intended for habitation, as well as the aggravating factor of recidivism. The judge imposed a sentence of 6 years and 8 months of imprisonment, in an initial closed regime, as well as the payment of a fine.
