On the next Saturday (19), the 9th edition ofNine Thousand Guitars for Victor Jarawill take place at the Cultural Space Elza Soares, in São Paulo. The event will feature artistic expressions, music, dance, poetry, visual arts, and also a book fair, crafts, and gastronomy.
ToConnection BdF, fromBrazil Fact Radio, Katia Teixeira, who is the founder and coordinator of the Dércio Marques Arts and Knowledge Movement, Dandô; Cecilia Concha, a Chilean singer-songwriter and cultural mobilizer; and sociologist Francisco Prandi, spoke a little about the importance of the event and the figure of Victor Jara.
Jara was a significant Chilean artist, working in music, theater, and dance, and one of the figures of resistance against the bloody dictatorship that imposed itself in Chile exactly 53 years after the military coup. "He was that complete artist, a guy who had a peasant origin, sang about rural things, work, everyday life. He has something very emblematic, he said he didn't like the idea of protest songs, because he said: 'No, our songs are not protest songs, we sing what we live, what we see,'" Prandi says.
Victor Jara was a member of the Chilean Communist Party and was assassinated on September 16, a few days after the state coup led by General Augusto Pinochet and supported by the United States, in a brutal manner. "In some way, he served as an example. The idea [of the military] was to convey that anyone who tried to build a popular culture with these values, these principles, and transmit this potential organizer of culture, the idea was to punish," he reports.
For him, the current moment Brazil is going through requires society to remember resistance figures like Jara. "Keeping this flame alive is our duty, especially in these times we are living under fascism, authoritarianism," he summarizes.
"Here in Brazil, we chose to sing about Victor's memory and the memory of all these authors who came before us and paved the way. The idea is to keep this path open and that we can continue on this path, involving other areas as well, such as agroecology, dance, visual arts," Katia Teixeira adds.
