The Public Ministry of Ceará, through the Nucleus for Assistance to Victims of Violence (Nuavv Cariri), has initiated a procedure to locate and provide comprehensive care to a group of pilgrims who were robbed in the early hours of this Tuesday (September 22nd) in the center of Juazeiro do Norte. The crime occurred when the victims were arriving at a guesthouse, located near the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows.
In light of the repercussions of the case and the vulnerability of the faithful during the pilgrimage period, the public prosecutor and coordinator of Nuavv Cariri, André Barroso, has ordered on-site investigations of the hotel network in the region to identify the guesthouse. In addition, the Public Ministry has sent official letters to security forces and municipal agencies to locate the victims and provide legal and psychosocial assistance.
The action of the Public Ministry of Ceará aims to strengthen coordination with the local public network and to subsidize standardized protocols for the care and protection of visitors during religious festivals, preserving the safety and tradition of pilgrimages in the region.
