RIPOST Law: The Great Surveillance Bazaar
We had already spoken(No translation needed as it is already in English)Before the summer of the RIPOST law by Laurent Nuñez, Minister of the Interior. A heterogeneous mix of security measures, the law was voted last June and then examined by the Constitutional Council. The latter approved almost the entire text. We review the most important measures in our view: the extension of "the experimentation" of algorithmic video surveillance (VSA), the extension of the use of automatic license plate readers (LAPI), the extension of identity check possibilities, pedestrian cameras, drones... Support for Autistici/Inventati
The Italian collective Autistici/Inventati offered associative hosting services: websites, emails, mailing lists, blogs, and other communication means. The particularity of their offer is taking into account the specific needs of the militant space. The privacy of exchanges, data security, everything that allows one to protect themselves from repression intentions, whether from states or malicious political opponents. Hackerspaces, social movements, media from all over the world happily used these services. And that's why the United States of Donald Trump decided to go after Autistici/Inventati.
Under the pretext of providing logistical support to "Antifa" - the terrible anti-fascist (or communist!) movement that threatens from within the great again American ideology of Trumpism - the federal government decided to list the digital collective on a global list of terrorist organizations and on a list of organizations with which it is forbidden to do business under the threat of sanctions. All providers of Autistici/Inventati therefore had until September 25th to end their commercial relationship with the structure. With its work made impossible, the collective announced on Monday, September 7th, the cessation of its activities.
The US decision obviously raises many issues. A host is in no way responsible for the words or organized actions of the people who use its services. While a commercial host would not have been threatened in its activity, the political coloring of the collective turns it into a target for a powerful state. In the face of this abuse of power, European associative hosts have drafted a support tribune for Autistici/Inventati, translated into French by the CHATONS collective. We will be at the Fête de l'Huma!
