Sanctioned by the acting President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin, theLaw 15.514/26confers the title of National Basketball Capital to the city of Franca (SP)
The proposal was put forward by Deputy Renata Abreu (SP), who is currently on leave from her mandate, through Bill 127/19,approved by the Chamber of Deputiesand by the Federal Senate.
Presenting the proposal, Renata Abreu argued that the city of São Paulo is driven by passion for basketball. Its population "breathes basketball, understands the sport, its rules, plays, players, and the characteristics of each one".
During the Senate's review of the proposal, Senator Astronaut Marcos Pontes (PL-SP) added that Franca is recognized for its historical relationship with basketball since the 1940s, when the sport became part of the local identity.
The senator noted that the city has produced athletes, coaches, and referees who have contributed to the projection of sports in Brazil and abroad. He also cited the importance of Sesi Franca Basquete, which he pointed out in his report as one of the most traditional and successful teams in the country.
In Franca, Pontes said, the sport mobilizes schools, social projects, youth categories, academies, and commercial establishments, in addition to generating jobs and promoting sports tourism.
