Law Project 2975/26 makes it mandatory to install countdown timers in traffic lights that have electronic surveillance. The equipment should display the countdown of both the green and red lights.
This rule applies to traffic lights with speed radars, stop signs, or pedestrian crossing signals.
According to the text, the counter must be installed clearly, visibly, and synchronized with the signal. If the equipment is missing, defective, out of sync, or has poor visibility, the application of fines on site is prohibited.
The author, MP Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR), says that the measure aims to provide predictability for drivers and avoid sudden braking or accidents.
"The countdown timer allows drivers to know exactly the remaining time for each traffic light cycle, preventing situations where a sudden change in the signal causes risky decisions," he explained.
The traffic authorities will have a 60-day period, after the law is published, to adapt existing equipment. The National Council of Traffic (Contran) will define the technical requirements for the timers.

To become law, the text must be approved by the Chamber and the Senate.
