According to the plan, up to 99% of the electricity produced in the country could come from clean sources by 2055 with theadvancement of wind and solar generationThe PNE projects a significant increase in demand, driven byexpansion of economic activity and new uses of electricity, for example, the increase in the fleet of electric vehicles.
The Brazilian government also projected that, to keep pace with demand growth, it will be necessary tomake significant investments in the transmission network, which is expected to be tripled by 2055. The plan also points out that energy efficiency will reduce pressure on the system: improvements in energy use can reducefinal consumption by more than 25%for the period.
However, the transition planned by the government does not eliminate the participation of traditional sources, with natural gas being used to ensure the system's security and flexibility whilerenewable generation advancesBiofuels will also have a larger share, with production potentially growing up tofive times in the next three decades.
Renewable sources representedapproximately 50% of Brazil's domestic energy supplyin 2025, while its share of the electricity grid reached 86.8%, according to the 2026 National Energy Balance by EPE.
Natural gas for data centers
At the beginning of September, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, defended the use of natural gas to meet the expansion of data centers and stated that Brazil needs to invest in artificial intelligence in order not to fall behind in the technological race.
Silveira also stated that the increase in demand for electricity in data centers requiresNew generation alternativesThe minister cited the United States as an example and argued that Brazil should take advantage of the regulatory and energy conditions created in recent years to attract investment in the sector.
"I am a proponent of natural gas, because the United States is currently producing 6.5 gigawatts [gigawatts] of natural gas for data centers. We have the entire production and energy generation environment, as well as the regulatory and legal environment, with the approval of the Redata [Special Tax Regime for Data Centers], to attract large data centers to Brazil — which is essential for us to be protagonists, including in AI."
