From October 17 to 19, Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo will host the Autumn Grand Festival, when crowds flock to honor Japan's war dead. But why does a place that enshrines the spirits of millions who died in war remain so controversial? The fact is, among them are individuals convicted as Class-A war criminals by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, following World War II. How is it that war criminals are still being honored? And why is the truth of history still being deliberately distorted in Japan? Based on the personal memories of both perpetrators and victims of the war, we ask: How should those responsible for war crimes be held accountable today? CGTN sat down with Brian Daizen Victoria, author of Zen at War, to hear his perspective.
