The new Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations, Carlos Pareja Rios, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

Ambassador Carlos Pareja Rios is a career Peruvian diplomat with more than four decades of service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in Peru’s diplomatic missions abroad. From April to July 2026, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru.
During his diplomatic career, he served as Ambassador of Peru to the Kingdom of Spain (2000–2002), the Swiss Confederation (2003–2005), the Republic of Chile (2009–2014), and the United States of America (2016–2018).
At the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he held several senior positions, including Director for South America, Director for International Economic Relations, Director of the Office of the Vice Minister Secretary-General, Director of Planning and Program Evaluation, Director General for Europe, Undersecretary for External Cultural Policy, and National Director of State Protocol and Ceremonial.
He participated in the peace negotiations with Ecuador and, in 1999, headed the Peruvian delegation in negotiations with Chile concerning the outstanding issues arising from the 1929 Treaty. As National Director of State Protocol and Ceremonial, he was responsible for the organization of the 2008 APEC Summit and the Latin America and the Caribbean-European Union Summit held in Lima.
He holds a degree in international relations from the Diplomatic Academy of Peru and a bachelor’s degree in law from San Martin de Porres University. He also pursued legal studies at the Complutense University of Madrid.
