Finapop,Popular Financing for Family Agriculturewill present the Brazilian experience in financing agroecology projects at the New York Climate Week this week. The aim is to share the Brazilian experience of financing cooperatives and associations for land reform and supporting the production of healthy foods.
Finapop's Executive Director, Luis Costa, will participate in a series of international meetings and articulations in the city during the event. The program brings together organizations, funds, and leaders from different countries to discuss agroecology financing, strengthening local markets, and building more resilient food systems.
Finapop's participation is by invitation from the Agroecology Fund and as part of its work in the Collective Action for Fair Finance (CAJF), which brings together organizations dedicated to transforming financial systems and strengthening economic alternatives focused on financial, social, and environmental justice.
The public articulation also publishes Transformative 25 (T25), an annual list highlighting 25 community financial funds and initiatives focused on systemic changes in social, economic, and environmental justice.
Representing Finapop, Costa will participate in various debate and dialogue spaces throughout the week.
"For Finapop, participating in these agendas is an opportunity to share a concrete experience built in Brazil: financing cooperatives and associations for land reform and the role that access to capital can play in the production of healthy foods, territorial economies, and strengthening rural communities in the face of climate change," he explained.
Among the main commitments of New York Climate Week are the panels: Direct Resources to Agroecology Enterprises: An Agroecology Fund of Funds on November 21; Agroecology and Local Markets as Climate Solutions on November 23; and If We Were Seeds on November 25.
The latter proposes a dialogue space about alternatives for food production and distribution and strategies to strengthen more sustainable food systems.
In addition to public events, the Finapop agenda in New York includes meetings and encounters with international organizations, funds, and initiatives, aiming to expand dialogue and build new possibilities for cooperation and financing for agroecology. "It's an opportunity to get to know other experiences and broaden articulations around agroecology financing," says Costa.
Finapop was born in 2020 as an initiative that believes it is possible to do things differently: offering credit and investment with purpose, adapted to the reality of family farming. It operates as a platform that connects people to cooperative and associations of settlers from agrarian reform, promoting agroecological production, valuing the collective, social justice, and integral sustainability.
