In the Senate, 18 out of the 32 senators who were trying to remain in office were defeated

The election on Sunday (4) determined the occupants of 54 out of the 81 seats in the Senate for the next eight years. Forty seats will be renewed, equivalent to 74% of the seats in contention. The remaining ones will be occupied by senators who were able to be re-elected.

Find out who the senators elected on Sunday were

Out of the 32 current senators who attempted re-election, 14 were able to obtain a new mandate, which corresponds to 43.7%.

Even before the vote count, it was already known that there would be a significant change in the composition of the House starting in 2027. This was because, among the occupants of the 54 seats in contention, 13 were not candidates and another 9 were vying for different positions or participated in the elections as alternates. With the results of the ballot boxes, the renewal was further expanded by the defeat of 18 of the 32 senators who were trying to remain in office.

Re-elected, in alphabetical order: Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE), Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ), Cid Gomes (PSB-CE), Eduardo Braga (MDB-AM), Eduardo Gomes (PL-TO), Humberto Costa (PT-PE), Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), Lucas Barreto (PSD-AP), Marcelo Castro (MDB-PI), Marcio Bittar (PL-AC), Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM), Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE), Styvenson Valentim (Podemos-RN) and Veneziano Vital do Rêgo (MDB-PB).

Numbers
The 2026 election repeats a 2018 statistic: in both elections, 32 incumbents attempted to remain in the Senate. In 2018, however, only 8 were re-elected, and the renewal reached 46 of the 54 seats, or 85.19%. In 2026, the re-election rate was higher, and the renewal rate was lower.

The other 27 Senate seats were not contested this year because they were filled in the 2022 election and have a mandate until January 2031. However, some will change in the coming year.

Cleitinho (Republicanos-MG) and Sergio Moro (PL-PR) were elected governors, while Alan Rick (Republicanos-AC), Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) and Professora Dorinha Seabra (União-TO) advanced to the second round in their respective states. The Senate is renewed alternately every four years: in one election, two-thirds of the House are chosen, and in the following one, one-third.
