Elected with over 144,000 votes, federal deputy,Rosa Amorim (PT-PE)will be the first woman without land to hold a seat in the Chamber of Deputies. At 26 years old, Amorimis currently a state deputy for Pernambuco.

Born on July 25th, the Day of the Black, Latin American, and Caribbean Woman and the Day of Saint Teresa of Benguela, Rosa Amorim, who identifies as a Black lesbian woman, was raised in the Normandia Settlement, in Caruaru, and is part of the first generation of settlers who were born and grew up on land that resulted from the agrarian reform.

Graduated in Theater from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), the deputy has been connected with the struggles of theMovement of Landless Rural Workers (MST)With experience in Levante Popular da Juventude and in the Culture Department of the National Students' Union (UNE), her main focuses are combating hunger, valuing family farming, defending the rights of the Black population and the LGBT+ community, popular culture, and women's rights.

She is one of the eight candidacies of the Movement of Landless Rural Workers to win a seat in the Senate, consolidating the movement's entry into institutional politics.

In an interview withConexão BdF, fromRádio Brasil de FatoRosa Amorim highlights that MST is the largest organized social movement in Latin America and that, for this reason, it is important to have a presence in Congress, which becomes increasingly conservative with each election. "It is a movement that fights for land and for the dignity of life of our people. It is important to remember that MST was by the side of President Lula every day while he was in prison to ensure Lula's election in 2022. Today we have aCongress Opposes the People, we already know that. Therefore, having a bloc dedicated to fighting for land will be very important,” he assesses.

In the perception of the deputy, the election of names linked to MST shows a recognition of the movement. And highlights that, in Congress, she will fight for the rights of all workers. “An important thing for the left is renewal. The PT elected a historic bloc of young people who will face this expressive bloc of the extreme right, to ensure that there is no regression. The extreme right arrives with anger, with hatred. I think it is important to say here about the issues with which they were elected: misogyny, machismo, LGBTphobia, hatred against the poor, hatred against the rights that we have historically won. But, as for that, I can assure you that we have a qualified bloc to make this fight, this confrontation,” he says. “The red flag is, without a doubt, today, the flag of hope,” he reinforces.

Amorim considers that the second round is not just about Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro, but also about defending democracy against a wave of external interference. “Therefore, this moment must be placed as a major concern. But the people are sovereign. We will give a response not to Flávio, not to this opportunistic extreme right. We will give a response to the world and to Latin America. This election is also important for that. So that President Lula can be a safeguard to guarantee the national sovereignty of neighboring countries,” he points out.
