Dance performance featuring dancers with and without disabilities used frames to question social norms

The Caixa Preta Theater, of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), hosted the inclusive dance performance on Thursday (3)Detachmentby the Lápis de Seda Dance Company. The group from Florianópolis (SC) brought contemporary dance produced by artists with and without disabilities to the stage.

Nine dancers starred in the scene using real-size frames. The dancers use them as stage props to re-interpret social framing. According to the company director, Ana Luiza Ciscato, this is a performance to "detach from what causes pain during the process of trying to fit into a place where one doesn't belong"

The differences are used as raw material for creation. All the movements come from the dancers, through laboratories directed by Ana Luiza, who is also the choreographer of Desapego. As the dancer Roberta Nastari de Oliveira states, the main trigger for the choreography was the frames. She explains that these items are visual elements that very well represent the concept of the performance on stage. “This also helps us understand what is behind Desapego.” The frames are a link between what is subjective and what emerges from the initial proposal – understanding what it means to be within the confines of a mold and the feeling one has when being trapped by the imposed picture.

The producer of the show, responsible for the logistics of the performances, Ulisses Souza, explains that Desapego was supported by Funarte and passed through three cities before arriving in Santa Maria: Florianópolis and São José (SC) and Curitiba (PR). The show will now return to Florianópolis to close the season.

“Today, we consider our work to be artistic, sensitive, and also very political. We understand that we are working for a cause,” concludes the director.

The company's passage through Santa Maria ended with a dance workshop for people with disabilities in building 40C on the main campus of UFSM, led by Ana Luiza. The workshop is a dance class, with all the stages of a "conventional" class: warm-up, stretching, and the proposal of creation and improvisation through games that work on interaction – which stimulates paying attention to the other.

Desapego (2022)

The performance addresses the social molds in which we are forced to fit in order to live in today's world. "It's something that causes a lot of pain. You are constantly fitting into a place where you don't belong and wouldn't belong if you were yourself," explains Ana Luiza, director and choreographer of the company. The performance and workshop feature a sign language interpreter and reinforce their commitment to accessibility for the public and artists on stage.
