We conducted an AUA (Ask Us Anything) session on Reddit with GNOME's new Board members last Saturday. Sri Ramkrishna - President, Jonathan Blandford - Vice-President, Maria Majadas - Chair, and Adrian Vovk - Vice-Secretary, addressed all the questions posed by participants. You can find them at:

I posted about all the cool things I did in August as part of the GNOME Fellowship, read about it here :)I am unable to access external links or specific online content, including the one you provided. Therefore, I cannot translate the text from the given URL. However, if you paste the text directly into the chat, I'd be happy to assist with the translation from Brazilian Portuguese to English.

GNOME Core Apps and Libraries

Files

Offering a simple and integrated method of managing your files and browsing your file system.

Peter Eisenmannreports

Files, aka Nautilus, received some significant changes in the 51 cycle, here is a selection of my favorites:

  • AdwTabOverview is used in narrow mode
  • Slightly smoother navigation through delayed clearing
  • Display badge with file count while dragging multiple files
  • Open locations from other apps in new tabs
  • Add an empty document menu entry if the templates directory is empty
  • Improve selection handling:
    • Correctly restore focus and selection if a file is removed
    • Do not unselect when right-clicking the view's background
    • Do not override manual selection with file operation results
  • Properly raise the window when other apps call "Open location"
  • Type-to-search support in app chooser dialog
  • Accessibility enhancement, e.g. for filename entry feedback
  • More tests (📈 44%)

PS: Ctrl+E is a yet-undocumented shortcut to focus the file chooser filename entry

In Bazaar, we are eliminating the dialog you sometimes encounter when installing an app that prompts you to select a specific source, instead opting for placing non-primary sources somewhere on the app’s page. This should streamline the most common scenario of simply installing the normal version of the app and prevent confusion for new users who don’t know which option to install.

Shell Extensions

Christian Wreports

It’s sci-fi week for Gnome. This week cwittenberg published two purely-for-fun sci-fi extensions:

Matrix turns your desktop into the familiar falling digital rain from The Matrix, while still keeping your normal desktop usable underneath it.

Starfield takes things a little further into space, adding a Star Trek: The Next Generation-inspired starfield that makes it look like your desktop is flying through the stars.

Both extensions preserve your existing wallpaper and renders the effects efficiently on the GPU using a shader, consuming hardly any CPU.

Neither extension will make you more productive. They may, however, make staring at your desktop considerably more entertaining.

RSS FeedThe GNOME Shell extension has a new release (version 9.0).

Adding feeds no longer requires typing them in individually: you can import the entire list at once from an OPML file, using the same format you can export from most other readers. Export is also supported, so moving your feeds to another location is hassle-free.

Accessibility has also been enhanced: the panel menu is now fully keyboard-operable, and the view scrolls to keep the focused item visible.

Under the hood, the extension now checks for feed changes before downloading, resulting in lighter network refreshes. Feed data is also stored in a JSON store instead of GSettings, which handles larger feed lists more efficiently.

Supports GNOME 46 to 51.
