New Permanent Representative of Malawi Presents Credentials
The new Permanent Representative of Malawi to the United Nations, General Griffin Spoon Phiri (rtd.), presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY
General Spoon Phiri is a Senior Military Leader and Diplomat with over 30 years at the intersection of Defence, National Security and Multilateral Diplomacy, former Commander of the Malawi Defence Force and National Security Advisor. He has extensive UN and AU experience as Defence advisor and Chargé d’Affaires.
PROFFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
- COMMANDER, MALAWI DEFENCE FORCE- 2016 to 2018
- Championed major defence reforms leading to the formational of a unified tri-service structure, improving joint operations and budget efficiency
- Served as principal military advisor to the president and cabinet on National Defence policy.
- NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR -2018 to 2021
- Principal Advisor to the President and Cabinet on all matters of national security, intelligence and crisis response.
- UNITED NATIONS AND AFRICAN UNION -2004 to 2015
- Defence Advisor, Malawi Permanent Mission to the UN and Malawi Mission to the AU-Addis Ababa.
EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
- Degree in military science and Post graduate Diploma in National Security Policy and Strategy
- Graduate of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and General staff, and the National Defence University- War College, Washington, DC, USA.
