Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has said Hungary will continue to provide protection to Ukrainian men of conscription age despite new EU restrictions.

That is according to TVP, Ukrinform reports.

On Thursday, September 3, Magyar said Budapest would retain the right to provide protection to such men, many of whom, he said, are ethnic Hungarians from the Zakarpattia region.

"A few weeks ago, the European Union decided that refugee status cannot be granted to draft-age men fleeing the war. Despite this, the government decided to retain Hungary's right to grant such status," Magyar said.

About 100,000 ethnic Hungarians live in Ukraine's western Zakarpattia region, which borders Hungary.

Magyar said he had raised the issue during talks with European Council President Antonio Costa in Budapest on Wednesday, arguing that it was wrong to prevent people from leaving a country at war.

"Hungary will act differently and provide assistance to those in need," he told reporters.

EU member states agreed in July to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028. The new rules, which took effect on August 5, bar new applications from temporary protection if they have not met their military obligations under Ukrainian law.

The restriction does not affect Ukrainians who were already receiving temporary protection in an EU member state before the new rules came into force.
