The pianist and composer Juliana Rodrigues releases her newest single today, August 31st.FreedomThe work, which is constituted from what is called the "Sound of the Aura" (a method that uses noise or a person's voice to compose melody and harmony), presents a speech from the former President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, interacting with a piano composition.

"I took Dilma's speeches and interwove them with Josefina Plá's poem, who is a Spanish-Paraguayan poet. Besides being a poet, she was also a ceramic artist, with several essays on gender. So she is a very important voice, and I feelText: sisterhoodBecause of this debate about how we, women, have spaces denied to us.
In the speech included in Rodrigues' composition, the former president speaks about the torture processes she endured while held captive by the Brazilian military dictatorship. Dilma was imprisoned for nearly three years, between 1970 and 1972.
The composer understands that by using the "Som da Aura" system, a term created by composer and arranger Hermeto Paschoal, she is able to articulate her political stance.
"I usually say that the sounds of the aura, for me, are a way for me to add verbal information to my show because I come from instrumental music. And in instrumental music, things become much more subjective, more hidden. So, I like to use this composition format to precisely add this type of discussion to my show, and if people have any doubts about my position, I understand that this type of composition makes them stop having those doubts." Rodrigues points out.
This is the pianist's third foray into this composition method. Her previous two sonic aura experiments include the composition "They Killed Another of Us," presented in 2018, which uses statements from Marielle Franco and Táliria Petrone, then-councilmen, to contextualize Marielle's murder months prior, and the album "Vive'" (2021), her second release.
The launch ofLibertyIt happens exactly on the tenth anniversary of the vote in the Federal Senate that led to the loss of Dilma Rousseff's mandate and cemented the coup against the then-president. Rodrigues comments that this alignment of dates was not planned, but it fits well by its significance.
In the work, Josefina Plá's poems, titled "Glosa III," are recited by Cuban percussionist Yordanka Medina. For the composer, she managed to bring together great female powers in the production.
I have art mixed with politics, and they are two powerful women [plus me], who would be a third, and Yordanka reciting the poem. I think it was a good solution to deal with these issues: women, gender, politics, and the Americas.
