Vladimir Putin congratulated the company of the National Drama Theatre of Russia (Alexandrinsky Theatre) on its 270th anniversary.
The message reads, in part:
“The long history of the legendary Alexandrinsky Theatre is known for a brilliant constellation of outstanding directors, actors, playwrights, scriptwriters, artists and musicians. To a great extent, thanks to their inexhaustible inspiration, talent and mastery, every theatre premiere has invariably become a momentous event in the cultural and public life of St Petersburg and the entire country, arousing sincere and genuine interest in theatre aficionados. Of course, the Alexandrinsky Theatre building, designed by the great Carlo Rossi, is a gem and a widely recognisable symbol of the northern capital.
It is pleasing to see that your company deeply respects the unique creative legacy of its predecessors, cherishing the wonderful traditions of loyal and selfless service to the beloved stage, to the people, and to Russian culture.
I know that you have made grand preparations for your home theatre’s anniversary and will present new remarkable productions and an eventful educational programme to your guests, timing the celebration to coincide with the opening of the 17th International Theatre Festival.”
