KÖLN/WIESBADEN – The mileage of toll-equipped trucks with at least four axles on federal highways increased by 0.6% in August 2026 compared to July 2026, adjusted for calendar and seasonality. As the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further announce, the calendar-adjusted truck toll mileage index was 2.0% above the level of the previous month, August 2025.
Truck mileage provides early indications of industrial economic development
Economic activity generates and requires transportation services. Therefore, there is a clearrelationship between the truck toll performance index and indices for economic activity, particularly industrial production. Since the truck toll performance index is available about one month earlier than the production index, it is suitable as a leading indicator for economic development. However, it is not possible to break it down by industry.
Methodological notes:
The truck toll performance index is based on digital process data that is generated during truck toll collection. The index tracks the mileage of toll-paying trucks. The index was developed by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility. The Federal Statistical Office prepares it as a seasonally adjusted economic indicator for Germany and the individual federal states. In addition, data on trips across the German borders is provided.

This data portal consolidates high-frequency indicators from official statistics and other data providers on the topics of economy and finance, as well as labor market, construction, and energy.
Within the scope of the "Toll Statistics" the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility analyzes toll data. Detailed tables, which have been maintained since 2008, are available on the BALM website under the name "Toll Data Table Work". Changes in the scope of the toll-subject road network, as well as the total weight of vehicles and vehicle combinations that underlie the toll obligation over time, are largely excluded by the truck toll performance index, making the economic development more visible.
Further results of the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility's table work are available through the existing publication program, with differentiations of toll-subject performance, for example, by registration state or pollutant class. Due to the broader data offering and the resulting higher processing effort, the monthly table work is generally later than the truck toll performance index and is provided without seasonal effect or structural changes in toll collection.
