Azaleas on the Xiangjiang River

In the winter of 1934, the Red Army engaged in a fierce battle against the Nationalist forces along the upper reaches of the Xiangjiang River that lasted for several days. Though they eventually broke through the blockade, their numbers plummeted from over 86,000 to just over 30,000. Each Tomb-Sweeping Day, some descendants of the 34th Division's martyrs drive hundreds of kilometers to Guangxi to pay tribute, bringing azaleas from their hometowns to honor and comfort the fallen heroes with memories from home.
