In 63% of couples in Germany, husband and wife have the same educational level

Most people in Germany choose a partner with the same level of education as themselves. According to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), based on the Mikrozensus, in 2025, 63% of mixed-gender couples had both partners with the same or similar educational qualifications. If the educational level differs, the man usually has the higher qualification. This was the case for a quarter (25%) of couples last year. The reverse case is less common: in 13% of couples, the woman had a formally higher qualification than her partner.
