Space weather (also known as space meteorology). Planetary K-index (Kp, 0–9 scale): measures geomagnetic disturbance. Low = stable shortwave propagation for amateur radio; high = storms affecting satellites and GPS. Solar flux (F10.7 cm, in SFU): Sun's brightness in radio waves — high means active Sun. Aurora borealis visible only at Kp ≥ 5, at high northern latitudes (Iceland, northern Norway, Alaska) or southern (Patagonia, Antarctica).
