The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), with the assistance of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, has detained an associate professor at the research center of a leading military academy under the Ministry of Defense who was acting as an agent for Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).

According to Ukrinform, the SSU announced the arrest.

The SSU's military counterintelligence, working in coordination with the Minister of Defense, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and the leadership of the military academy, thwarted another Russian attempt to obtain Ukraine's latest developments in unmanned technologies.

As a result of a preemptive operation, officers detained a highly valuable Russian military intelligence agent – working for Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) – who had been spying for the enemy at one of Ukraine's leading Defense Ministry military academies.

The investigation established that the mole was an associate professor at the academy's research center.

Acting on instructions from the GRU, the agent copied and transmitted design documentation for the Defense Forces' latest strike drones to his Russian handler.

The official also deliberately deemed promising Ukrainian weapons developments unviable during expert evaluations of their tactical and technical characteristics.

To this end, he prepared negative assessments of prototype unmanned and robotic systems, falsely claiming they were unsuitable for use in combat conditions.

However, the SSU's military counterintelligence documented the suspect's every move.

Through its preemptive actions, the SSU used the mole to mislead the enemy while also preventing classified Ukrainian defense technology from being passed to Russia.

During the final stage of the special operation, SSU officers detained the agent in his office as he was attempting to send another batch of documents to his handler in Russia.

Investigators established that the associate professor had been recruited by Russian intelligence services through an acquaintance in Russia. In return for carrying out espionage assignments, he hoped to secure a position in Russian local government authorities.

During a search, officers seized two mobile phones and computer equipment that he had used to maintain covert communications with Russia's GRU.

The SSU investigators have served him with a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).

The suspect has been remanded in custody without the right to post bail. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

As reported by Ukrinform, the SSU’s counterintelligence recently detained a Russian citizen recruited by Russian intelligence services to help coordinate strikes on the Zaporizhzhia region.
