Oleksii Makeev, Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, made this statement in an interview with Ukrinform.
When asked what the most common formula for supporting Ukraine is among German politicians today, the diplomat noted that there is a certain mix, but that “tremendous progress” is being made.
“I can’t say with absolute certainty. It’s a certain mix. But I see tremendous progress: from the phrases ‘as much as is needed’ and ‘Ukraine must not lose’ to ‘we will support Ukraine so that it wins and secures peace for all of Europe, and therefore for us as well,’” Makeev said.
According to him, recent months have brought another important shift in the attitude of the German political elite.
“What’s very important over the past few months—and this, I think, is a kind of Zeitenwende 2.0 [turning point]—is that people have started saying there’s a lot to learn from Ukraine,” the ambassador noted.
He expressed his conviction that this very approach will shape the further development of relations between Ukraine and its European partners.
