Typhoon Bavi (09W) is currently located about 400 miles to the
north-northeast of Chuuk near 12.9N 153.8E and is moving west at 13
mph. Maximum sustained winds are 120 mph. Chuuk is currently located
within strengthening west-southwest flow on the far southern
periphery of TY Bavi, and will remain within its peripheral
influence in the next few days as the storm strengthens and continues
moving toward the Marianas.
Chuuk is expected to remain outside of the direct wind field of
Bavi, but surging west to southwest winds around 20 to 25 knots are
expected to continue building across the region south of the storm.
Models suggest west to southwest winds will peak sometime Saturday
or Sunday, maintaining seas hazardous to small craft, and a Small
Craft Advisory has been issued for Chuuk through at least Monday
afternoon. Inter-island travel will be hazardous and should be
avoided. Additionally, west to southwest swell looks to build as TY
Bavi develops and moves away, which will lead to elevated, and
potentially hazardous surf into early next week. At the same time,
chances for locally heavy showers will increase through early next
week as the strong west to southwest flow across the region funnels
deep moisture into the trailing convergence behind TY Bavi. Near-
gale to gale- force gusts are expected, especially near heavier
showers.

Cyclone Public Advisory issued by the National Weather Service under
