Super Typhoon Bavi (09W) is currently located about 400 miles to the
north-northeast of Chuuk near 12.5N 150.8E and is moving west-
southwest at 8 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 160 mph. Bavi is
expected to continue moving generally west, eventually turning to the
west-northwest through the next 24 hours, passing through the
Marianas sometime Monday. Although the exact time frame is still
somewhat uncertain, and Yap and Palau are expected to remain outside
of Bavi's direct wind field, surging west to southwest winds around
20 to 30 knots with gusts to 40 knots are expected to develop across
the region south to southwest of the storm. Models suggest west winds
around 15 to 20 knots will begin to pick up for Yap and Palau late
Sunday, peaking sometime early next week with potential to generate
choppy, hazardous seas which could make inter-island travel
hazardous. As STY Bavi develops and begins to move north to northeast
of the region, a surging west to southwest swell looks to develop,
which will lead to elevated, and potentially hazardous surf in the
first half of next week.
