Extreme rainfall battered Fushun City in northeast China's Liaoning Province in the early hours of July 4, triggering devastating flooding, causing widespread property damage and leaving at least three people dead, according to the local flood control headquarters.
The heaviest rain fell between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Saturday, bringing citywide average rainfall of 106 millimeters and maximum single-site precipitation of 329 millimeters. The one-hour, three-hour and six-hour rainfall intensities all shattered historical records, marking one of the most extreme rainstorms ever recorded in Fushun. The sudden deluge caught many residents off guard with raging floodwaters submerging roads, collapsing rural water channels, flooding residential compounds and underground garages, and swamping large areas of farmland. Bridges and river embankments were severely damaged, while partial water and power blackouts paralyzed parts of the city.
