The visit strengthened parliamentary links between the UK and Guatemala. Deputies learned about the Westminster system, including how it examines legislation, debates public policy and holds government to account.

The delegation met Minister of State for Trade Policy Chris Bryant MP, UK Trade Envoy to Central America Dame Jess Morden MP, parliamentary committee representatives, and officials from government departments and public bodies.

They discussed trade, governance and other areas of cooperation between the UK and Guatemala.

The deputies also visited the International Maritime Organization (IMO), where they learned about efforts to improve the safety, security and environmental sustainability of international shipping.

They met officials from the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and visited the Elizabeth line and the King’s Cross redevelopment project. These visits showed how the UK delivers major infrastructure projects.

This was the first Guatemalan parliamentary delegation hosted by the British Group Inter-Parliamentary Union (BGIPU) since 2002. The visit renewed parliamentary ties and identified areas for future cooperation between the UK and Guatemala.
