Vladimir Putin extended congratulations to professional players, coaches and tutors, as well as to all chess enthusiasts and fans on International Chess Day.
The message reads, in part:
“This ancient intellectual sport enjoys popularity throughout the world. Its ideals and values bring together people of different ages and generations, nationalities and cultures. Chess develops the ability to think logically and make sound decisions quickly, while also fostering determination and perseverance. Of course, we take great pride in the rich history and remarkable traditions of the Russian chess school, as well as its legendary winners and champions.
It is gratifying that today considerable attention is being paid to preserving and developing the unique creative legacy of our prominent grandmasters. Specialised centres, schools and clubs are opening across the country, while large-scale chess tournaments, and festivals including international events, are being held. Most importantly, more and more young people, students and schoolchildren are gathering around the chessboard.
I am confident that today’s celebration will take place in an atmosphere of fair competition and friendly communication and will serve to further promote chess.”
