New protocol for legal professionals wishing to raise concerns informally about coroner behaviour

Following the Lady Chief Justice and Senior President of Tribunals issuing a new protocol setting out an informal resolution route if legal professionals have a concern about a judge’s behaviour, the Chief Coroner has now issued an equivalent protocol.

The Protocol for legal professionals wishing to raise concerns informally about coroner behaviour provides an informal route through which legal professionals may raise concerns about the behaviour of a coroner where early and constructive resolution is appropriate.

The protocol does not replace the formal complaints process. More serious concerns or instances where concerns remain after attempting informal resolution should continue to be referred to the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO) (external link), which is responsible for formal complaints against judicial office holders.

The protocol reflects the principles set out in the judiciary’s recently published informal resolution protocol for concerns about judicial behaviour and aims to promote professionalism, respect and confidence within the coroner service.
