Medical School welcomes 65 foreign students to the 2026 Winter School
Now in its tenth edition, the Medical Winter School offers Brazilian and foreign undergraduate medical students the opportunity to take courses and share experiences

“This is the first time I have participated in the Winter School opening ceremony as president, and for me, this has always been a celebratory moment. The presence of international students in our classrooms, laboratories, libraries, cafeterias, and hallways transforms and enriches our school”, said USP President Aluisio Segurado at the program’s opening ceremony on July 20. Segurado was the driving force behind the first edition of the Winter School in 2015, when he was chair of the Medical School’s International Relations Committee.
Segurado also highlighted the program’s alignment with the university’s internationalization guidelines, which aim to consolidate its role as an international hub of knowledge and innovation. “USP is not just a Brazilian university; it is a global university. It is an institution committed to promoting dialogue among diverse cultures, building bridges between continents, and preparing its students and researchers to thrive in a globally interconnected world and address the challenges of contemporary society”, he stated.
“Over the next two weeks, participants will immerse themselves in an academic and clinical ecosystem centered on the largest hospital complex in Latin America, the Hospital das Clínicas. This year, we are proud to offer intensive, high-level courses designed to connect scientific theory with clinical practice. Medicine is a collective effort, and this program is a unique opportunity to build global networks and exchange perspectives on healthcare”, explained Paulo Pêgo, Vice Director of the Medical School.
“In addition to the exchange of scientific knowledge, this is an opportunity to immerse oneself in different cultures and ways of teaching and practicing medicine. It’s an excellent opportunity to meet students from various countries and learn from this experience”, said Han Moshage, a professor at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) who attended the ceremony and spearheads internationalization initiatives between the Dutch university and other medical schools.
Also participating in the ceremony were Paulo Henrique Braz da Silva, director of the Academic Mobility Division at the USP International Office (Aucani); Valeria Aoki, chair of the Medical School’s International Relations Committee; and Iolanda de Fátima Tibério, chair of the Medical School’s Undergraduate Studies Committee, as well as students and faculty members from the school.
Medical Winter School
The Medical School’s Winter School is an English-language course designed for undergraduate medical students at USP and partner universities in Brazil and abroad. Participants are selected based on their academic performance, awards received, and academic activities carried out at their home institutions.
The program provides an opportunity to interact with students of different nationalities and fosters the exchange of new knowledge and interests in medical fields. The program consists of two weeks of educational activities covering the following 14 topics: Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, General Surgery, Gynecology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Tropical Diseases, Neurology, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Plastic Surgery, Cardiology, Psychiatry, and Geriatrics.
In addition to the educational program, visits to the Hospital das Clínicas complex and cultural and social activities were scheduled.
Since its inception in 2015, the program has hosted 499 medical students from 71 partner institutions in 27 countries.
