The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) (external link) will be launching a selection exercise in September to appoint 14 non-legal fee-paid Finance Members to the Social Entitlement Chamber (SEC).

The seminar

The Judicial Office is organising a pre-application seminar that will take place online via Microsoft Teams on Tuesday 8 September 2026 from 5pm to 6pm.

The seminar aims to help prospective applicants better understand the role and be prepared to make an application. Attendees will receive up-to-date guidance and advice on the JAC’s selection process, including eligibility, the application process and what to expect during the selection exercise.

As well as hearing from the JAC, you will also hear from Tribunal Judge Angela Shields and a Financially Qualified Tribunal Member (FQTM) about the work of the Social Entitlement Chamber, the role of a Finance Member, and their experience of sitting in the tribunal. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

Who should attend?

This is a non-legal selection exercise, and the Social Entitlement Chamber is looking for accountants who have held full membership for at least five years with one of the following professional bodies:

•    Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)
•    Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)
•    Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI)
•    Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA Ireland)
•    Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
•    Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
•    Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA)
