China's meteorological authorities forecast more rainfall over the next three days in mudslide-affected Gyirong County, in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region. It also urged heightened vigilance against secondary disasters.
According to the forecast, light-to-moderate rain, with local downpours, is expected from September 2 to 3.
Huang Zhuo, deputy director of the National Meteorological Center, said at a press briefing that early September remains part of Gyirong’s late rainy‑season period.
Huang warned that rainfall may make roads slippery, requiring extra caution for traffic safety. Increased runoff may also raise water levels, so river conditions should be monitored closely. The risk of landslides and other secondary disasters may increase during persistent or intense downpours. Rescue workers should also take rainproof and warming measures.
Wang Yawei, spokesperson for the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), said the agency activated a Level-II emergency response immediately after the devastating mudslide.
Wang said the CMA reached out to Nepal's meteorological agency and held video weather consultations in the wake of the disaster.
He added that the administration provided Nepal with a range of products. These include meteorological monitoring, forecasts, early warnings, and impact-based services via its AI-enabled early-warning program, the MAZU platform. A customized version of MAZU has also been developed and delivered to Nepal for trial use.
The CMA said it will continue to strengthen international meteorological cooperation with Nepal. It will also work to provide support for Nepal’s emergency rescue and relief operations.
